Career Position and Leadership Goals Stament

Position Goal

When I started this process I thought that I would want to grow my career in education to become a superintendent. I thought that if I got my certificate now that it would be just a matter of time and hard work for me to move through my career goals. But these thoughts were quickly changes by the things I saw as I interviewed and talked with people in central office and the reactions that I got from the district and duty superintendent. I would have a hard time of changing my moral and ethics to undercut and twist people the way the District has done over the past several years. I have found that more decisions are made for individual growth or personal gain than for the success of students. I cannot move myself forward at the sacrifice of students. During my video conference with Dr. Creel, he brought up some other issues that caused me to pause at the decision to pursue a career as a superintendent. He threw caution my way in terms of the sacrifice my family would have to make and the health issues that arise with becoming a superintendent. These two things are hard to maintain now as an assistant principal. As I look forward I will finish the program, take and pass the test for superintendent certificate but will forcible look for a superintendent position in the future I am unsure.

Leadership Goal

My leadership goal in education is based upon the belief that children are the most valuable resource in our community, city and nation. The maximum educational development of each student is my ultimate objective. I feel we should equip our students with the increasingly complex knowledge and skills to prepare them for formal education in a college and professional schools. We should strive to introduce our students to practices and ideals of personal and group behavior that perpetuate and advance the benefits of a democratic society.

The role of leadership in education can be described in a few words consistent, instructor, facilitator, counselor and listener. The word consistent means always (acting, thinking or happening) according to the same rules or principles; this definition is what a leader needs to be at all times when dealing with their subordinates, counterparts and superiors. As an instructor and facilitator it is important to teach what you want done then become a coordinator of the things to be done. A leader as a counselor and listener must pay attention to others then advise to the best of your ability. It is perfectly acceptable not to know the answer but knowing where to find the answer is what is important.

These aspects of education make the job of a district leader a great way to make a difference in all children’s lives. As well, it promotes the growth of others and encourages a supportive safe and secure environment that will ensure lifelong learning for all.

The things I learned in this internship have led me to become weary of the goals of a single man. It has taught me to keep the whole in mind when planning, implementing, and growing thought change. It has also given me the confidence to stand for what is correct regardless of the thoughts of others.

Self-Assessment Reflection

As I compare my responses from the first class EDLD 5396 and my current answers. I can see where I have grown in my development and understanding of each Competency. In Domain One, Competency 1 there was no changes in the assessment. In Competency 2 there was growth in two areas, facilitating the development, use, and allocation of all available resources, including human resources, to support implementation of the district's vision and goals and maintain awareness of emerging issues and trends affecting public education and communicate their significance to the local educational community. Competency 3 had an area where I did not think I grew which was influencing the media by using proactive communication strategies that serve to enhance and promote the district's vision. In Domain Two, Competency 5 I felt I rated myself as competent the first time around and this time I felt that I was competent. In Competency 6 there was steady growth through all the competencies. Most of competency 7 was rated as strengths for me but there was improvement in the area of facilitating the application of adult learning principles to all professional development activities, including the use of support and follow-up strategies to facilitate implementation and implement strategies to enhance the expertise and skill of staff at the district and campus levels. Domain Three Competency 8 there was nothing but improvement. In competency area 9 I remained competent in this area. In competency 10 I feel that analyzing and use political influences to benefit the educational organization is area that I still need growth.
